Hilti B22 battery not charging — causes and fixes

When a Hilti B22 battery won't charge or the charger flashes an error, the cause is rarely simply dead cells — more often it's the BMS electronics, a deep discharge or the contacts. Below are the common causes and what can be fixed.

The most common causes

  • Locked BMS — after a deep discharge the electronics enter a protection mode and block charging.
  • Deep discharge — a long-unused pack drops below the threshold at which the charger detects it.
  • Faulty thermistor — the temperature sensor interrupts charging.
  • Dirty or burnt contacts — no connection with the charger.
  • Worn cells — a single "dead" cell can block the whole pack.

What you can check yourself

Clean the battery and charger contacts, try another working Hilti charger, and wait — a deeply discharged pack sometimes needs a few minutes before the charger starts. If that doesn't help, the problem is inside the pack.

What we repair as part of the service

We diagnose the electronics, repair or reprogram the BMS, replace a faulty thermistor and all worn cells (Samsung / LG / Sanyo), then calibrate the pack. The battery charges and works properly again — with a 12-month warranty.

What not to do

Don't improvise reviving a Li-ion battery or connect it to an external voltage — it risks damage or fire. It's safer to send the pack in for diagnostics.
